Foreword
Maldelangue, a large, foreboding estate on the desolate coastline of Massachusetts. The year was 1875, and the mood was one of unrest… the Civil War is recently ended, but many were the troubles: carpetbaggers, graft-ridden administration, recriminations of the patriots—and the hidden vices at Maldelangue. Brian, recently graduated from Columbia University, New York, entered the service of Phillipe Langue to tutor his incorrigible son, and the black waters of bloated evil closed over his head and he found himself in a morass of bestial sexual practices and secret Haitian rites involving perverted love-acts and aphrodisiacal drugs. The only person who could save him was the classically beautiful Paul Prideux… But did Brian want to be saved from his newfound man-lust? “Primary consciousness is a diffuse awareness of feeling, a state of being in want; and the experiences by which we discover what we want can be very misleading…” So write Kenneth Walker and Peter Fletcher in Sex and Society. And this dilemma was such as held Brian a slave to his own ambivalent feelings toward the monstrous rites in which he unwillingly participated.
