Foreword
On this particular Friday evening, the punk’s world seemed more bleak than usual. He had exactly seven cents in his jeans, but he’d turned down the few offers made during his long travels in the rain… a wrinkled old fart in a Cadillac, a pimply kid in a beat-up Chevy, a pair of black queens who giggled like a couple of chicks…
The punk reached a darker area, where the storefronts ended and fog clung in rolling clumps beneath the unlit facades of unmanned gas stations… three of them, occupying the corners of an intersection. Beyond these was an on-ramp to the freeway. It seemed colder here, though perhaps the lack of illumination merely made it seem so. He hurried on, anxious to reach the islands of light once more. Western wasn’t the best place for a guy to hustle a buck, and he sure as hell wasn’t going to score when the drivers couldn’t even see him.
