The bushes to the right parted and a tall, dark haired man stepped out. He was handsome, in a rough, brutish fashion. His hair was longer than the other men’s, and he had muddy brown eyes. A long scar ran down the left side of his face.
He gazed with evident amusement at the two boys.
“My compliments,” he said, to the bemused boys. “It’s my duty to inform you only one of you is allowed the ‘luxury’ of the cells. The other must take his chances in the soldiers’ barracks.” He grinned. “Which one is it going to be, boys?”
David and Greg stared wildly at each other. Neither knew what to say.
“Well, if you can’t make a decision, I guess I’ll have to do it for you.” The man suddenly grabbed David and pulled him to his side.
“You get to meet the commandant. Lutz, take the other one into the wilderness and teach him how to be a good little pet for a lonely soldier.”
Lutz saluted with more enthusiasm this time, and took Greg by the arm. Greg opened his mouth, and Lutz offered to blow his head off. Greg shut it again and followed Lutz out of the little clearing.
“Come forward, boy,” Lutz ordered. Trembling, the boy faltered forward two steps, then stopped. The sergeant smiled, a razor-thin smile that cut the boy to the bone.
