Foreword

It is 1969, the height of the Vietnam War. That time saw the peaks of both savage fighting in the Far East and savage rioting in the streets, as well as the university campuses across the United States.

The U.S.S. Isabel cruised relatively unnoticed off the coast near Hue, that November 19th. An undistinguished, aging destroyer commanded by an aging, undistinguished commander; the Isabel seemed destined for an obscure footnote in the pages of Naval history.

Then suddenly and violently, the ship and its crew were propelled into the front pages of every major newspaper in the world. Accused of conducting his own private war, Commander Dimmeter faces certain condemnation and dismissal at the hands of a court martial.

But in the midst of scandal, another breaks—two of the officers accusing Commander Dimmeter of trying to keep his crime a secret, have been found to have a secret of their own. Capitalizing on this discovery to calm an angry public, the Navy publicizes the details about these two young officers—hoping attention will be diverted to them rather than the Dimmeter affair.

Loosely based on an incredibly true story, The Isabel Conspiracy is the first of two books tracing the beginnings of this tale of betrayal, mutiny, injustice, and bigotry. Lieutenants Keith Edwards and David Parker find themselves propelled suddenly into history and must fight every inch of the way to maintain their lives and dignity. This novel explores not only the exciting action leading to the sensational court martials that followed, but also examines the workings of a system that subtly destroys all who oppose it.
