FOREWORD

It has been said that the second oldest profession is prostitution. If that is so, then homosexual prostitution must be as old as the race itself. Certainly it was well known in all of the civilizations of classical times–the ancients, the Greeks, the Romans, the Etruscans and Cretans of the Mediterranean world, and many far-flung civilizations of the middle and far east, all kept slaves for the purpose of sexual gratification. That many of these slaves were young boys causes no raised eyebrows even today.

Yet the average person today seems surprised and shocked to find that young men, boys, still offer themselves in prostitution, to both of the sexes. There have been well-organized rings of such youngsters–one, broken up on Long Island a few years ago, had among its clientele thousands of middle and upperclass businessmen and professionals, many of them very well known to the public. It was reported in the New York Times that these men would gladly pay fifty to one hundred dollars and more a night for the services of the youngsters. And the boys themselves were drawn from many of the best families on Long Island. These were not cheap street corner hustlers, selling themselves to the first corners for a few dollars. To be accepted as a customer, the client had to prove his standing and his credit rating.

What of these boys, many of them in their very youngest teens? Were they harmed by their experiences with these older men? Did it cause damage to their minds, their development, to sell themselves in such a way?

This is what the reformers and moralists would have you think. But in truth, these boys were only exercising a more extreme form of release to their growing sexual appetites. Young boys and young girls are sexually mature years before it is acceptable that they engage in such activities, so perhaps it is only natural that such boys should seek their relief from the demands of their bodies by turning to a way that profits them materially as well.

Danny, the central character of this novel, is just such a boy, willing to bestow his favors on those who return his affection–until one person offers to buy what the boy is not willing to give freely. From that moment on he discovers the profit motive, and shares his discovery with his closest intimates among his own age group. But as all too frequently happens, the secret is soon out and Danny finds himself in the midst of water so hot that he must run away from home. He decides to head for California, a dangerous undertaking for a fourteen year old boy–for on the way he finds that like prostitution, slavery is not something from the dead past. There are still those today who practice it, and any runaway child, boy or girl, is a prime target for their attacks.
