Excerpt

Soliciting never stops. It may appear to be only a nocturnal adventure because it is more commonplace under the cover of darkness. The night affords privacy. Deviates can take up their positions beside trees, hidden by rocks or in the bushes. Here they are sought out by others looking for a momentary experience. It is accomplished rapidly and furtively, often without a word of conversation. A hand reaches out, trousers are unzippered, positions assumed. The sex act, generally oral intercourse, is quickly accomplished.

Bus and railroad terminals are obliged to spend countless thousands of dollars policing their public facilities. Throughout the country they are known as rendezvous points for homosexuals.

A previous chapter reported sexual activity taking place in a washroom of a 42nd Street theatre.

Theatre managers are fully aware that this is commonplace. Those who can afford it hire special officers to patrol the lavatory facilities. Lesser ones are dependent on regular inspections by ushers and theatre managers.

Their best efforts in detecting offenders and ejecting them from theatres only scratch the surface. They are faced with the problem of doing their best, aware they are accomplishing only half the job.

Many have settled on protecting children. When an usher sees a youngster heading for the lavatory he has instructions to leave his post and follow him, to make sure he will not be accosted.

Certain streets, especially those with large stores like Fifth Avenue, are known as “cruising territories.” Homosexuals, often using dogs as bait, walk up and down, peering into windows, waiting until they attract attention. The cigarette device, a comment about the dog—little more is needed to effect communication. And an arrangement—if one seems desirable.

At least, sidewalk soliciting does not follow with a public display like those carried on in lavatories and parks.

Probably the easiest point for quick homosexual contact is that to be found in certain turkish baths.

They cater exclusively to homosexuals and flourish in all the major cities. Their names are known to the homosexual underground.

They are filled from morning until night, packed with men of all ages and sizes, garbed in flimsy cotton robes who patrol the halls endlessly.

Doors of those interested in a visitor are left ajar.

This is the invitation to enter. When a partner appears he looks over the occupant slowly and deliberately, waiting for a response. Unless he’s told something, like ‘No, thanks’ or ‘I’m tired,’ he proceeds inside and deftly accomplishes a manual inspection.
