Foreword
The question of conflicting loyalties is one which arises at some time in almost everyone’s life.
Somewhere in the course of events, each person must make certain decisions as to where he or she stands on crucial matters. On these occasions, life, down to its minute details, may change dramatically. When the crossroads decision concerns sexual loyalties and identity, this is especially true. Once the boy crosses the threshold into the world of homosexuality, for example, his attitude toward even the most basic and simple aspects of life may alter drastically.
When he walks down a crowded street, he no longer feels obligated to appraise available young women, an act which he may have been carrying out almost as a reflex, simply because society has told him in various subtle ways that this is something he must do, one of the rituals he has to perform because he is a hot blooded young male animal.
Now that he has made his decision, he is free to turn his attention where he chooses, where his gonads lead him, to willing and attractive males, some of whom he will find gazing back at him with equal ardor. He is now free to explore the traditional haunts and gathering places of gay males, the bars, the parks of large cities, and, if he fancies them, the baths.
Young men who have found their way out of the closets approach the world they have entered in varying ways. Some, even though they have declared themselves gay, continue to frequent the same bars, the same parties, hoping, usually in vain, that the world of the homosexual will somehow come to them. These individuals wait hopefully, some for a lifetime, for some magic thing which in all probability will not come. No good fairy, forgive the pun, is waiting in the wings ready to lift the newly declared gay male to the glittering heights of sexual rapture.
Coming out of the closet is but the first faltering step. Remaining steadfast in one’s determination to live the gay life and to adapt it to his own personality and individual needs is a fulltime occupation and one which does not end. In the present society, with its openly sanctioned discrimination of not only gays, but of anyone who does not appear to fit into preconceived and proscribed molds, living as a practicing, well-adjusted homosexual is a constant challenge.
