reached out and patted the hairs on the back of his knotted little hand. I managed to control my revulsion pretty well, I thought.
“S-s-sorry, Merl,” I mumbled. “You know how it is.”
“Sure, kid—I mean Mr. Cardigan. Tough.”
I nodded. “What I did for the government, Merl old boy, I was in taxes. I sort of did some undercover checking on taxes. That was my job up to three weeks ago.”
You could almost feel him swell with pride. He had discovered what he wanted to know—in fact, what I wanted him to know.
“Well, hell,” he said, “what did your personal life have to do with that kind of work? They’re not fair, Mr. Cardigan. Listen, you need anything? I mean, I know you’re fixed okay, but if there’s somebody you wanna meet, say the word.”
I withdrew my hand and snatched up the drink. “I’ll say the word, buster! The word is get outta here and leave me alone. What d’ya think I am, one of your queens at the bar?”
He got up, murmuring his apologies, and left. I cursed him under my breath. Also under my breath but lower still, I cursed Lawrence V. Griffin. And the events of three weeks before, leading up to this moment—
