FOREWORD

In many ways, the truck driver may be the 20th Century counterpart of the cowboy of the Old West. With a unique freedom, he travels great distances or short hauls, all in the brawling, rough-and-tough world of uncompromising masculinity. But in recent years, more and more serious attention has been turned to the understanding of that “masculinity.”

“Horny,” “hard up,” “cock-hot,” all of these are expressions heard frequently when truckers meet at a piss-stop or coffee shop on the road or in the locker room at the end of a long day of road-pounding work. Sexual needs and exploits seem to be a prime concern of these modern-day cowboys, along with a desire to conform to the stereotypes of “masculinity.”

But is this view of trucker masculinity rational?

The trucker enjoys a unique freedom, but he also suffers from a gypsy-like lifestyle. There is no time to establish more than “fuck-‘em-and-forget’em” relationships with a professional or amateur whore… unless the trucker accepts the availability of homosexual outlets.

As we re-evaluate “masculinity,” it is only right that we also examine male-to-male relationships.

At Surrey House, Inc., we feel that all sides of the human experience should be allowed “equal rights,” even the experiences of so-called “minorities” like homosexuals, lesbians, blacks, Chicanos… and truckers.

* * *

Many of you will remember Clay Caldwell as the author-narrator of Truckin’ Naked, one of the most honest and informative books on truckers available. Clay is a professional trucker himself, and the first time he wheeled his rig into San Diego, we invited him to visit with us at Surrey House, Inc. At that time, he tape-recorded his thoughts and experiences in a series of easygoing conversations, then swung up into the cab of his diesel, gave us a casual half-wave and went back on the road. Since then, we’ve received an occasional postcard from distant corners of the country, each signed almost formally, “yours sincerely, Clay.”

Recently, a huge diesel rig rumbled into our parking lot and Clay dropped from the cab and came ambling into our offices. Big, brawny and good looking, he gave each of us his shy-honest greetings just as he had when he’d been here before, and then he offered us the manuscript of this book with the explanation that “these are some trucker-type stories, if you’re interested.” It turned out that the stories had been written by Clay’s buddies as a result of his first book, so we asked him to edit them and give us his tape-recorded comments on each one, just as he’d given us his thoughts on Truckin’ Naked.

The result is Truck Jockey’s Shorts, a mixture of Clay’s tape-recordings and the short stories he brought us.
