The startled expression on Kevin’s face was enough to convince Hayes that he had caught him unaware. Hayes felt unable to look at the man. He studied his shoes, shifting his weight from one foot to the other. His courage left him as he felt the scrutiny under which he stood.
“What are you doing here?” Kevin demanded.
“May I come in?” he asked meekly.
“I suppose so,” said Kevin, snorting impatiently and stepping aside.
As Hayes walked into the shabby room, he cleared his throat. Yet the voice came out strained and thin. “You haven’t been answering your telephone,” he said humbly.
“No, I haven’t.”
Hayes sank into a chair; looked up slowly, waiting for Kevin to continue. Then, realizing as he glanced at the hard, cold eyes that no explanation was forthcoming, he spoke. “I called you several times a day…” The moisture began gathering in his eyes. He looked down immediately, not wanting Kevin to notice.
“Hayes, please.” Kevin fortunately, or unfortunately, had noticed. His tone became more tender. “I’m not worth it,” he finally added.
“Yes, you are. To me, you are,” he answered, studying the faded pattern of the floor covering. “If you don’t want to see me,” he continued, “then that’s different—just say so.” He was almost crying openly now.
