Foreword

Growing up is always difficult. Just the physical problems alone are often severe; when these are coupled with emotional uncertainties, the problems may become insurmountable.

It is helpful in the adolescent period if the boy can have some adult guidance, someone older, more secure, who can provide a model and point out the proper and most useful directions and show the boy how best to meet his problems and chart a successful course into full adulthood.

Unhappily, all too often such a guide is not present. Or worse, there may be someone who exploits the boy, who steers him into even greater uncertainties.

Sexual urges are, of course, central to the difficulties the adolescent encounters. The glands and hormones start to boil and bubble and the kid is left with all kinds of unfocused wishes and deeply urgent needs with no satisfactory outlet available. This provides fertile soil for the actions of the exploiter. The boy is vulnerable, alone and wants to be adult and to be accepted as an adult—as a man—by the other adults.

The boy, in this sort of situation, will do nearly anything to gain the approval of those around him, those people he respects and wants to like.

Complicating the boy’s position is the situation in which the boy receives two different views, has two different adults offering different approaches to the world—and to themselves.

Adults, too, have conflicts, have various wishes at war with themselves. Some they may not be fully aware of. Others which they deny or suppress. The resolution of these differing desires may be painful. And in an all male setting these resolutions may be violent.

Conflict is part of life. The man who is totally free of conflict is dead. Literally. Life is an ongoing process, a synergistic system, if you will, of dealing with conflicts.

In this book, we see a boy dealing for the first time with some adult conflicts, both within himself and with the adults around him. We see also the conflicts that beset some of the adult characters and see how they deal with the crisis of this particular moment in their lives.
