What I was seeing, good people, was a set of triplets.
More than that, they were triplets out of the Arabian Nights, in spite of their modem clothes. More than even that, these were not the personages who would have played the good guys in that collection of merry tales of the erotica; what they would have been was the bad guys, the ugly guards, the—and I shuddered at the thought—the executioners!
“Ahh” said executioner number one. “I see your color has returned. Good! Allow me to introduce myself and my brothers. I—” and he indicated himself with a thumb that was as thick as my neck “—am Chano. This is my brother Kolino, and his is my other brother Boreo. I am the only one of the three to speak in your language, Mr. Cardigan.”
“Then please to inform me,” I said, the pain easing up enough for me to articulate, “what in hell I am doing here!”
Chano smiled. Well, it wasn’t a smile, exactly. Let’s call it a grimace. Whatever it was, it was ugly. “You will be informed as to that shortly. It was our duty only to seek you out and bring you here.”
“Here?” I looked around. What I saw was a plush room, ornate with Oriental decor, pillows on the floor, carved furniture, huge draperies covering the walls, no windows showing, lighting coming only from a very splendid chandelier. “And where is here?”
Chano sighed. It was like the rumbling of a Mack truck through the Holland Tunnel. “Alas, Mr. Cardigan, sir. It is not my function to answer questions. Indeed, I am not permitted to even think. All I do, all we do, is use our strength in the service of our ruler and our country.”
