Excerpt
“God!” Richard sighed into his hands. “This is going to be some vacation; I can see that now.”
A few minutes later he heard the toilet flush and Gary came back into the room. He dug furiously into his open suitcase and threw socks and underwear onto his bed, then sat on the edge of it to pull them on, not looking once across the room at Richard.
“Gary?”
The boy didn’t look up. In fact, he made no gesture that he’d even heard Richard’s voice.
“Baby?”
When there was still no response, Richard got up from his chair and crossed the room to Gary’s bed.
He squatted on his haunches so his face would be level with the boy’s.
“Let’s not have another fight,” he pleaded.
“Okay? Let’s try and make this next week something we’ll remember for all the right reasons.”
“If that’s what you want,” Gary said with a listless, disinterested shrug.
“If you don’t want to go to the Music Hall tonight we’ll go someplace else. Just tell me where you’d like—”
“You can go if you want to,” the boy interrupted, his eyes suddenly boring hard and steel-cold into Richard’s. “It doesn’t matter to me. And you can go on that fucking cruise tomorrow, too. But you’ll be going alone, because I’ve had it. As far as I’m concerned, we’re through. From now on, you go your way and I’ll go mine. Starting tonight.”
Richard’s first impulse was to laugh. Not humorously, but with the explosive sound made by a man who’s just taken a hard punch in the gut. His hands gripped both the boy’s legs and he dug his fingers into the solid, hairy flesh. “Don’t say things like that, baby. Not even as a joke.”
“Is that what you thought it was? A joke?”
“Gary, please…“ Richard bent his head and kissed both his young lover’s knees. “This trip can be so wonderful if we both cooperate and try to make it work. It’ll be fun, too. You’ll see. Remember how excited you were when I first mentioned it?”
