And, to give the devil his due, nothing is more stimulating than Uncle Henry.
Odd, Tim tells himself, that he should have thought “nothing” rather than “nobody”.
But then, he supposes, his uncle’s lack ot human dimension in thought, word, deed, and person does have that effect on Tim—that is, he has long ago ceased to think of his uncle as a human being, finding instead that his Henry is some force of nature—violent, unpredictable, on occasion devastating.
And he can well believe that it requires the mere presence of his uncle to turn a bunch of men into walking lethal weapons.
His uncle has that talent.
And it is a talent which found a home in the Firm. That is, in the Firm as it was.
Because, right now, his uncle is here in Washington, or, more accurately, across the river in Virginia, fighting for the view that there is a place for him and for what he can contribute just as there always was.
And the imbecile who runs Nicaragua has played right into his hands, breaking the truce with the Contras, a force with whom Henry has had nothing to do thus far.
With results, as he pointed out to Tim, which are only too well known.
“Give me a thousand men with nothing heavier than Uzis, Tim, and a couple million rounds of ammo, and I will give you Managua and Ortega’s head on a silver platter from his own dinner table.”
That’s his Uncle Henry.
