Excerpt

Yes, there was Gaston’s place. Nothing had been added or detached. In fact the years had been very kind to it. There was where Juan used to keep his boat. God, what a beautiful boat. What a beautiful man. What wonderful parties had taken place inside its white walls. In its place now was a smaller boat. No one was on its deck but there was a brilliant light in its small cabin.

He was certain this was just where he had had a flat that cold miserable night. He remembered the handsome boy who had come to his rescue. He remembered the following months and the smile on the boy’s lips. What did he himself know about changing a tire, but to the young man it had been a simple thing. Funny how you meet people, he thought now.

Nicky…Nicky Lazzo. He smiled to himself remembering, wondering where Nicky was now.

An oil truck roared by him, clanging a chain on the concrete road, but he really never heard it. He had become primitive, fully at home. His thoughts and the shining lake purified him from longing. His mind was now so clear that it seemed to him like a room into which sunshine poured; through which comforting breezes blew; no dark corners, no forbidding shadows, nothing but light and happiness and this new security of the spirit.

He was aware this was one of his epic moments, with nothing to mar the perfection of feeling; and his excitement increased tenfold on seeing a small building, supported over the water by high, heavy poles. The moonlight shone like an incoming breaker above and below the walk leading to it, the building itself was shrouded, only an outline against the sky.

But to him it was as if the sun shone brightly upon it. It was a feeling of someone seeing home after a long and strenuous journey. He breathed in its beauty for every detail he pictured pleased him. He embraced them and with piercing intensity there came to him the words of a song, because by coincidence it bore the name of the building.
