Preface
“Who’s Jerry, Mike,” Gordon asked again.
The smile left Mike’s lips. “Well,” he began to explain, “Jerry’s my ex-lover… he’s the one I was tellin’ you about earlier this morning. He’s the guy who left me and tried to come back. It was a mess. I’d rather not talk about it.” He frowned and they walked quietly to the starting line.
The sun had begun to drop, and only a red glare crossed the desert. Lights bordering the track were already turned on, ready for the full night of drag racing. Gordon clasped his hands over his ears as the pair stood at the starting line, watching car after car leave the starting grid in loud, thunderous roars. He looked at Mike occasionally, watching the facial expressions which reflected a combination of envy, concern, and anxiety.
