“Listen,” he began softly. “How to break the vampire curse!” Davy began to read to Barnabas. “The curse of the vampire, if cursed by his lover, or loved one, can only be broken after a suspended animation of 25 years or more, and, after this awakening, he must live as a normal human for a period of one year… to live the normal life… the cursed one must do without as much blood as possible, and eat solid foods, drink liquids.
“I can’t!” Barnabas slumped back.
“Why?” Davy asked.
“A normal person goes out in the sunlight. But if I did… I’d die…” Barnabas said sadly.
“Not necessarily,” Davy looked back at the book. “Let’s read further on. To live the normal life, the vampire cannot go into the sunlight, therefore, he must do his normal living at night but be careful to avoid the cross, water, garlic, and sunlight. He can use his powers for any purpose other than the intake of blood. He must continue to act as a normal being and engage in human recreations, sexual affairs and all other qualities, despite the fact that he must have strong willpower to control his desire of vampirism, thereof.” Davy stopped reading for a moment. He sat down in the chair next to Barnabas. “That doesn’t seem to be awfully hard to do.”
Barnabas grinned slightly. “Oh, no, then read the last line.”
“The last line?” Davy looked down at the book. “The vampire must love one person of the living human, and this person must return the love, which must last the entire year. Without this last ingredient, the curse cannot be broken.”
“See, it’s hopeless,” Barnabas sighed. “Who’s going to love a green, fanged, 123 year old vampire? Sure I could love someone else, but who on earth would love me… an ugly creature like me… for a whole year?”
“Barnabas.” Davy got from the chair and stood before him. “You’re not ugly… you are very handsome… Barnabas, I love you.”
