Prologue

The one thing Dennis Riley wanted was freedom.

Although he’d tried hard during the conscious self-conscious portion of his very young life not to kid himself or play games with reality, if he had to flip a coin today to decide his future, he would desperately want both sides to be labeled “freedom.”

It never occurred to Dennis that there inevitably had to be another side to the coin, that freedom and independence were inextricably linked to commitment and responsibility. Hell, words like those belonged to parents or teachers, to all grown-ups, church, family, school, job, or government. Words like those had nothing to do with him.

He was young and almost innocent. The world lay in front of him, waiting to be explored, experienced, enjoyed. Nothing was impossible; almost everything was possible, he was young. He was also attractive and extremely well endowed. He knew he could take care of himself. If he sought he would find.

Now Dennis wasn’t exactly sure of what he would find or how he would find it, but that didn’t bother him in the least. He was damn sure he was going to try, and along the way somewhere he would discover happiness for himself—the kind of happiness that only freedom and independence could bring. Now the time had finally come when he could leave his family and school and church and childhood and hometown behind. His time had come, the time of Dennis Riley. The Age of Aquarius. The age when an innocent could storm the citadel of the big city and conquer it, when all could be his if only he were ready, willing, and able.

Well, damn it, he was plenty ready, he sure was willing, and he was going to find out if he were able.

The idea that he could be conquered never crossed his mind. And certainly nothing in his high-school education had taught him that it was possible to win a battle and lose oneself, nor lose a battle and discover oneself. In Dennis’s innocence, you either won or lost: you came out on top—independent, free, the victor; or you ended up on bottom—dependent, caught, the loser.

The time for Dennis was here and now. The battleground had been chosen: The big city. And he was going to be the hero of his own story…
