Dean said, “Let’s show him through the apartment, Kevin.”
My eyes were wide, seeing too much. There was a fabulous kitchen, with a futuristic walloven and dishwasher, and two mosaic-tiled bathrooms containing sunken bath-tubs and wall-to-wall thick cotton carpeting that I wanted to wiggle my bare toes in. There was a bedroom all painted in a rich chocolate-brown color, with an enormous double-bed covered by an expensive yellow silk spread, and another bedroom, connecting it by large shuttered doors, that was done in all navy-blue and accents of eye-dazzling scarlet in the bedspread and draperies and furniture upholstery. The whole apartment was right out of a spectacular movie!
“Here, have another beer,” Dean said, when the three of us returned to the garden.
“I need it,” I blinked. “I’m absolutely flabbergasted by all this!”
Kevin looked at me and smiled. “Take it easy. You’ll live longer.”
It was irrational, at that moment, why I asked the question, “But where do I sleep? You showed me both your bedrooms, but I didn’t get to see mine.”
Dean moved behind Kevin’s chair, reached down and stroked Kevin’s thick hair. “Kevin and I share a bedroom. The blue room is all yours, Paul.”
I blinked, and my hands automatically clenched into fists at my side. “But—but there’s only a double bed in your room.” Kevin sat up straight. “Yes, that’s right. You see, we sleep together. We’re lovers. Some people call us queer boys.”
The beer gagged in my tight throat, and I spat it out.
