And the following story is about pain, and pleasure, and emotion. It is about a certain sexual need inside several young men that goes deeper than just their homosexuality; although, at least one of the characters you’ll read about in this book is momentarily so caught up just with inherent fears of his possible gayness that the finer nuances of his sexual awareness are threatened with being overshadowed.
“The relation of love to pain is one of the most difficult problems, and yet one of the most fundamental, in the whole range of sexual psychology,” states Ellis. “Why is it that love inflicts, and even seeks to inflict pain? Why is it that love suffers pain, and even seeks to suffer it?”
Read then of several men searching for love; love that—by its own definition—must contain more aspects of pain than many of us are used to accepting. Read of young men who, while not possibly completely understanding the sexual complexities hard to come by.

It is, therefore, only through those rare insights into the gay bondage and discipline subculture, such as is allowed us in books like NIGHT OF THE ANIMALS, that we are finally able to realize that sexual outlets which might seem the extremes for some of us are, in actuality, not only necessary for the complete satisfaction and fulfillment of certain individuals, but are also possibly beneficial in that their violation of archaic taboos helps break down sexual mores which have—by most standards—become outdated within the structure of the modern society in which we all exist.
