FOREWORD

Olaf was Prime Minister to Gustav I of Sweden. They had grown up together, had been lovers for years, and Olaf was very much in love with his king, his lover, and very jealous and possessive.

Gustav suddenly developed a wandering eye and it fell on a young page that had come to his court from Jutland.

When the King went beyond the stage of looking, Olaf became incensed, going on a rampage of vengeance that threatened not only the young page but his beloved KING as well.

* * *

The time is Sweden in the late eighteenth century. All Western Europe is shocked by the rebellion in France and the resulting imprisonment of Louis XIV and his young wife Marie. In London mobs roam the streets, making members of Parliament withdraw civil liberties that had been in existence for centuries. A pall of fear and anxiety hangs over the capitals as speculators wonder which crown will roll next.

Although geographically removed from the rest of Europe, Sweden and Denmark are too plunged in a war—civil and external. The province of Jutland, seized by Sweden centuries ago, is swept by a fiery rebellion against the Swedes. Denmark is aiding the peoples of that land, hoping to take it for itself rather than grant them long-desired autonomy.

Trapped in this is the young King Gustav I, son of Theobald. Having seized the throne from his mad father on the advice of his close friend Olaf the young monarch must face external threats as well as intriguing lords within the capital. In his prime minister Olaf, young Gustav finds not only the capable confidant and adviser, but a vigorous and aggressive lover within his royal chambers.

A rift, however, develops between king and minister over an alliance between the monarch and Ottavio, a young boy from the rebellious Jutland. Unknown to Gustav, his closest adviser becomes his deadliest enemy, drawing forces hateful to the young monarch to destroy him. TO KILL A KING studies the intrigue prevalent in most European capitals during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth century. It was a time of great change and great hope. It was a time of powerful passion that could often lead to the construction or annihilation of a throne.
