Excerpt
We each drank silently. The gimlet was tangy and refreshing. It warmed the pit of my stomach. I still felt the light pressure of his leg against mine.
A quick glance at his crotch showed a respectable bulge.
“What’s your excuse for drinking at this wonderful hour when man should be toiling at his chosen work?” Jeffrey Carter asked me.
“I’m unemployed,” I said. “A high school teacher with nobody to teach.”
Jeff Carter raised his eyebrows. “I thought teachers were pretty much in demand these days.”
“The school board and I had a slight disagreement,” I said. “So I’m free to enjoy the beauties of October in Chicago.”
Jeff Carter shrugged. “Too bad, but you should find something else easily enough.”
I looked at him closely. What the hell, why not take a chance and tell him the truth? I was damn sure that he was not straight anyway. This would be a good opening wedge.
“There is a little matter of a recommendation,” I said.
“Oh?”
“I was caught very stupidly in what I believe is called ‘in flagrante delicto.’ The city fathers of Center City take a dim view of this with their sacred pupils.”
“Oh?”
He continued to look at me questioningly.
“The little bastard wasn’t even a very good lay,” I said flatly.
Jeff Carter threw back his head and laughed out loud. It was a strong, hearty, man’s laugh, good to hear.
