The air conditioner stopped whirring.
“Of all the…” He felt his temper rise. “On a day like this, that damn air-conditioner has to conk out.” It infuriated him so. “Well, maybe I can call the repairman. I have my guarantee.”
But then he had another thought. “What if it’s just a fuse. It could be.” Impulsively, he reached for a lamp. He snapped. No light. “That’s it. Now, what do I do about a fuse?”
He decided to call the superintendent. He dialed quickly. “Is Tony there? This is Michelle, up in apartment 609. It’s the fuse. What’s that? On, Tony left? You’re Gino, right?” The mere recollection of Gino set Michelle on fire. Here was a real impish looking boy, younger looking than his 23, and a firecracker when you just touched him in the right place. “Oh, Gino, I don’t mean to bother you, but it’s hot as blazes up here and I just have to have that air-conditioner. Be sweet and come up and put in a new fuse. I’ve got to have it.”
Gino laughed happily and agreed, “Sure thing, Michelle. Be right up.” There was a slight inflection to the boy’s tone. He was a native born Sicilian, with hot sensual lusts as those awful red peppers he used with his meals. He had been brought over by his married brother, Tony, and was now living in the superintendent’s apartment until he could get a job on his own. In the past four years, though, he had really learned much.
Michelle kept gasping because the apartment felt close. He would not open any window. Why let in any hot air at all? he reasoned. In a short while, that cute Sicilian boy would be up here.
They had never fooled around.
Oh, Gino was all for it. Michelle knew it.
