Excerpt

Don, sixteen now and a sophomore in high school, was not an unhappy boy. He did not think he had missed out on anything by being raised unconventionally. In many ways he was like his aunt: vain, detached, more interested in himself than anything. He had gone to school in Statesboro for two years, ever since they had returned to Lorene’s hometown from San Antonio, where she still kept her lakeside home for summer visits.

When Lorene’s father had died and left her a great deal of land in this vicinity, the woman had promptly sold the land and constructed the large, comfortable mansion on Elm Street. It was one of the finest houses in the city of twenty thousand people, and it was located on what was generally known as “the Hill.” Statesboro College was only a few blocks away, and most of the professors lived within the five-block area of the Hill.

Don turned from the window now and went to stand before his mirror. He allowed the towel to drop from around his waist. He saw a strikingly handsome boy. He stood five-feet six-inches tall, and although he was small-boned, he had a naturally good physique for his height.

His face was his most valuable feature, he thought-swarthy and sensuously beautiful, a little more than arrogant with its high cheekbones and flawless complexion.

His black hair swept back over his forehead, forming a crest, and his sideburns were clipped below his ears. When he smiled, it was a charming flash of brilliant white teeth, all of them perfectly even against his dark skin. He was very proud of his appearance, and he had a habit of wielding his charming physical appearance as a weapon against older people in order to acquire what he wanted.

Had it not been for his secret lust for the male sex-seemingly so perverse in one so attractive to men and women alike—the boy could easily have been one of those persons accustomed to having whom and what he wanted when he wanted it.
