Foreword

Chris submitted a thesis called Consequences of Solitude and as a result finds himself on a small island near Hawaii on a deserted army base in a scientific experiment to find out what the real consequences are… especially what happens when a group of men without women and no particular work to do, do for release. They find plenty of ways, in spite of what they thought before they came to the island. Even Chris becomes involved. He completes his report and knows more about himself and other men and the consequences of solitude on a virgin island when he finishes his experiment.

PROLOGUE

Chris submitted his thesis, Consequence of Solitude, and Chris hoped to spend the summer hiking while the committee commented; however, on May 31 when he opened his mailbox he found the following:

Dear Mr. Woodson,

Professor Greely has been kind enough to send me an advance copy of your interesting work. As you know, various of the armed forces are, from time to time, required to subject their personnel to the situations you discuss. Perhaps if your schedule allows, you might consider spending the summer on a project with us. In any event, please call for an appointment at your earliest convenience.

Very truly yours, Cyril Kone USN (ret.)

Ten minutes later, resigned to the loss of his hiking trip, Chris called Mr. Kone to hear the proposition.

After a brief introduction, Cyril—formerly admiral—Kone explained his project: Each branch of the service had an interest in the effects of isolation. The Air Force needed the information for its space program; isolation affected submarine patrols; the army was considering a base in Antarctica. Each of these scenarios required groups of men in close contact for protracted periods of time with little or no stimulation from outside.

What the admiral proposed—and he had obtained all necessary clearances-was subjecting recruits to a desert island summer. Thirty-six men, Thirty-seven counting Chris, would fly to a forgotten atoll somewhere near Hawaii. Once there, they would spend the summer fishing and swimming, no contact allowed with their families or friends.

“What do I do besides report?” Chris asked. “Anything you want. I don’t like to use the word experiment but that’s what it is. Make the most of it.”
