WHAT HAPPENED TO MARK…
“Sit down, Lans,” Mr. Lucas said. “Did you hear what happened to Mark Downing this morning?”
“No, sir.”
“Well, he was caught with another boy in a homosexual act in the cow barn.”
“You and Mark roomed together, Lans,” Mr. Grace said. “Did Mark ever come near your bed, or put his hands on you? Did he ever play with your privates?”
The boy looked at the floor. “No, sir,” he said softly.
“Now, look, Lans, we don’t want you to be afraid to tell us the truth. We just want this for our records, because Mark has to be sent to the reform school. Are you sure that he never made any improper advances toward you?” Mr. Lucas asked.
“Yes, sir. He never bothered me any.”
“I thought not,” Mr. Grace stated. “Lans is a bit too young for Mark, I feel. But I’m still surprised, Mr. Lucas. In the three years or so that Mark was with us, there was no indication of homosexual tendencies. He surely was not the sissy type. He got along well with the other boys. It’s too bad he has to go to the reform school. I’m sure he’ll learn more deviltry there than he ever would here.”
“Well, I’m sorry too,” Mr. Lucas said. “I don’t like to see any of our boys go there. But rules are rules. He was caught in the hayloft with a boy who was one of our honor students, and both of them will have to be transferred to the reform school today. We cannot tolerate homosexuality here.” Again he paused and looked at Lansing. “You understand that, don’t you, boy?”
“I don’t know,” the boy replied.
“What do you mean, you don’t know?” Mr. Lucas asked.
“I don’t know what that word means.”
“What word?”
“Homosexuality.”
“There, didn’t I tell you?” Mr. Grace said. “The kid doesn’t even know what we’re talking about.”
“Well, it means when other boys do immoral acts with other boys, Lansing. Now do you understand?” Mr. Lucas asked.
“Yes, sir.”
“We do not allow that here. Nor do we allow masturbation. Understand?”
“I don’t know what that word is, either,” the boy replied.
“My God! He’s as innocent as a new-born baby,” Mr. Grace said…
