Foreword

No man can say for certain what his reaction will be under sudden tension. Both heros and cowards are born in an instant, and none of us can be sure which we’ll be when that instant, and none of us can be sure which we’ll be when that instant comes; some are galvanized into action, others seem to fall apart.

In Jocksucker, men are trapped under the threat of impending nuclear war between the two most powerful nations in the world, a war which may well bring total destruction. They are also caught in the rigidity of military life which allows no easy escape, no turning and walking away. They must face the mounting pressure… and they must face themselves as well.

For Tom Brawley, the jocksucker, there are additional personal threats. For reasons he doesn’t quite understand himself, he has volunteered for a series of secret missions behind the Iron Curtain, and with each venture, his nerves have been worn thinner and thinner. But a total breakdown isn’t all that Tom fears: he is also a homosexual, a “queer” within a system that rigidly refuses to admit that sexual deviation exists. Perhaps he is successful as a secret agent because he has been playing roles in both straight and gay worlds all his life, but now both worlds are on the brink of disaster.

On the other hand, Tom’s “straight-arrow” friend Colonel Harry Pike has his military unit to command, his wife and son, the particular ‘jock’ Tom takes pride in attending to, to protect, and, ultimately, a moral decision to make which seems impossible.

How much pressure can a man stand? In Jocksucker, some ignore the approaching holocaust by losing themselves in sex and liquor, others bury themselves in the protective numbness of military ritual… but none of them can escape the nightmare building about them.

While Jocksucker is fiction, the problems it presents are plainly human. If you were Harry Pike, what decisions would you make? If you were Tom Brawley, what actions would you take? Hero or coward? And if you survived a Purple Alert, could you face what you had discovered about yourself?
