Growing up is seldom easy and for a young boy like Kirk MacDiarmid adolescence is especially complicated. Kirk has been living with his uncle, waiting for his father to get out of prison. While his father has been away, Kirk has come to grips with his homosexuality and now that Hugh MacDiarmid is coming home, the boy is unsure how he will get along with his long-absent father.
Such a delicate situation might have many conclusions. To adjust will be difficult for both men. Hugh is anxious to begin a new life. Kirk is hesitant about trusting his father, who has hurt him terribly over the years. And the secret issue of Kirk’s new gay awareness is an added strain in their new life.
But, as Kirk soon discovers, many things and many people are not always what they might first appear to be. Gradually the boy learns to accept his father for the man he is, and Hugh does the boy the same favor.
