They talked, longer interims of quiet stretching between them as time passed, and Kirby recognized Nick’s restlessness, his uneasiness. But he was surprised when Nick half-turned to his side of the seat, leaning over toward him, eyes narrowed, intense, a bit glazed. His breath was labored, as though he were having to force himself onward.
“Hey, buddy, you know Billy Greene, don’t you?”
His voice was strained, tight, as though he were choking with some veiled emotion, trying even so to sound casual.
“Yeah. Why?”
“You know what they say about him, don’t you?”
“You mean that he likes boys instead of girls?”
Nick laughed short, sharp, a bark of emotional strain.
“That’s putting it mildly.”
“Do you believe it?”
“What? That Billy’s queer?”
Kirby swallowed, trying to hide from himself his own nagging uneasiness, a reluctance to follow this line of conversation, afraid where it might be leading.
“I think it’s just talk. I like Billy. He’s a little soft and too nice, but he’s okay.”
“Sure he’s okay. I like him too, but he’s still queer.”
“Why? Because he jerks off with other guys? Man, it isn’t like you to go around repeating gossip, Nick. Hell, if that’s all it took to make a guy queer, you and I are, too. We still beat off together—maybe not as much or as often as we used to when we were kids, but I bet you would right now, wouldn’t you? It seems like every time we come out here to the lake after dark, that’s how it ends up, skinning our pants down and pumping a load out of our dicks. You wanna?”
He teased, thinking that the topic of conversation would have inhibited Nick and that he would refuse, but instead, Nick reached over, fumbled with his wide leather belt and the buttons of his jeans, wrenching them down from his body to rumple around his knees.
