When the two boys left the place together, Del was a bit out of sorts about the whole messy thing, and kept asking Pete whether or not it wasn’t all a mistake–that maybe he shouldn’t have gone through with it. The whole sickening chaotic entanglement was now regrettable to Del.
“Oh, Del, look, you can’t be serious! Christ, what’s so awful?” he said. “If you’re going to keep on thinking about what others might always say, you’re going to go nuts! The best of them—even some of those in the social register I’ve met, give orgies that make our little performance tonight look like a child’s game. Look, I’ll take you to parties, normal ones, that’ll make the kids over at Ramey’s look like a bunch of novices when it comes to sex! Hey, now don’t get me started! I’ve been around this town a hell of a long time longer than you have, baby, and I’m with it, kid, all the way! So, don’t you play Pollyanna with me!”
“Now don’t go getting so pissed off, will you? I wasn’t just brought out yesterday, myself–but I’m still new at some of these things, and I know it,” said Del apologizingly.
“Well, let’s call it a night,” said Pete. “I’m bushed. Oh–you’ll get a check a day after tomorrow. I’ll pick it up and bring it over myself.”
