FOREWORD
Peter Jenson was an only child, which is to say a lonely child, on what had been, which is to say no longer was, a working farm. He never fully understood the circumstances that had brought him to the farm. His first nine and a half years had been spent in relative comfort in New York City, teeming with its masses, not yearning at all to be free.
Peter had felt his solitude, been aware of the fact that he didn’t make friends quickly. In fact, he made friends hardly at all during his entire nine and a half years. But he took some comfort in the fact that there were so many people around. He somehow sensed that he would be accepted by all of those people, and be friends with them. Someday.
But a death, his mother’s, a remarriage for his father, a stepmother who was more like Cinderella’s than most people would believe, and he found himself on a farm in Louisiana. Though he hadn’t lived a decade, he knew that the move to his grandmother’s farm would effect a tremendous change in his life.
He would look back later, when he was old enough, and would find the next years blurred in his memory, melted together, with years impossible to separate from each other until a week before his sixteenth birthday. First there was Charles-
Then Bob came into his life. Suddenly. Completely. From that point on, his life couldn’t be the same. He knew too much and had lived too much to turn back from there. The farm wasn’t large enough for him certainly, and maybe the world wasn’t. But he would find out.
