“You may as well take your first dose today,” the strength coach informed him, opening the bottle and handing Gable one pill. It was a large capsule filled with some powdery substance. “You’ll get one of these every day, preferably first thing in the morning when you can take it on an empty stomach. I have to make sure you take it, and check it off on your sheet.”
“I don’t take drugs,” Gable said, rather puritanically.
Hugh snickered. “Then you’re in the minority. “Some of the other guys here have been popping steroids and other shit for years, like candy. A couple of them are actually going through withdrawal symptoms, so don’t be surprised if you run across a guy who seems to be acting a little out of it. Just ignore him and go about your business.” Hugh paused in the doorway.
“You’re a good-looking dude,” he said softly. “Do you like to play around?”
It seemed to be Gable’s day for blushing. “What difference does it make?” he asked evasively.
Hugh leered at him. “God, you are naive!” was his parting shot. He closed the door, and Gable heard him laughing to himself as he sauntered down the hallway.
