Foreword
This book is about a kid, Kevin Williston, and what he learns on the road. Not the most approved of schools, not by a long way, but an effective one all the same.
We learn all the time. All of us. Every day we gather new information, insights, knowledge and, with luck, bits of wisdom, too.
Now Kevin knows a lot; smart kid, right from the start. But wisdom, that’s another thing. He gets some of that along the way, during the course of this book. How much, well, that’s for the reader to judge.
Is he too young for this sort of thing?
Sixteen, sure, but, right from the first, he seems older—certainly in experience. And who are we to say what is the right age—for anything?
Variety drives Kevin to new adventures. He has fun learning, and has the guts to go on learning all the time.
What is he after? Experience, mostly, but self-knowledge, too. He like the rest of us, wants to understand what motivates him. He wants to come to grips with his feelings, his drives and desires—concretely, directly, honestly.
Americans have been described as the most mobile people in history. We move all the time, from city to country, town to city, driving, flying, often not with any real direction or destination, or at best a temporary one. What are we seeking? What pushed us, pulls us, tugs us across the continent? We, as a nation, span all of North America and seem determined to go, personally, over every inch—several times.
A mystery, mainly. We get somewhere and want to be someplace else. Like Kevin.
Really like him? Well, not exactly. But yet… but yet, maybe, just maybe, there is a bit of the Kevin in all of us. Who knows?
