Foreword

Within The Front Desk and its staff of intelligence agents a battle for control takes place and the position as Director of Operations. There are two factions: Those loyal to Algernon Cloutman, present Director, and those wanting Lucas Faryia, a Black agent, for Director.

Faryia, the Ebony Colossus, had been one of the operatives working the Basilisk mission in a previous Bruce Doe novel. He’d been shot in the face by a spy whose master was the super-fiend Krishna Rau while with Bruce at the Turkey-Syria frontier. Faryia is brought back in this novel after months in Walter Reed Hospital, Washington D.C. and painful plastic surgery; his eyes have been fitted with corneal lenses enabling him to penetrate the minds of enemy agents.

The third faction, supported by the Senate Committee Investigating Intelligence, is a senator named George Finsilver.

Finsilver is the pivotal character in this story of double-crossing and treachery as he moves through these pages with Bruce Doe, Adam Bludger (Executive of Clandestine Operations), David Klein, Shmuel Lanholtz—all people in the Bruce Doe series—as they try to defeat the Senator’s villainous maneuvering for power. The plot moves from an elegant 18th Century mansion on Paris’s Left Bank to Nice and Monte Carlo. There is a scene in a mountain village near Monte Carlo with plotting that is classic in all spy novels: Bruce Doe held prisoner by a murderous group of militants while Adam Bludger—and the rest—frantically attempts to rescue him.

A mysterious man, Inspector Martin Martinot, head of the French SDECE (an agency similar to The Front Desk), holds the cards in the game of intrigue—literally holds them in the last scene which takes place in the Monte Carlo gambling Casino during a “rigged” play at Baccarat.

A nineteen year old spy for the Israel Shin Bet (Intelligence) also moves through these scenes; and, is it possible, young Aaron Kedem has the “key” all along?

Joe Foreman, the redheaded counter-espionage agent for The Desk, appears; he, too, was in other novels of the Bruce Doe Series. And Maury McGrath, Cloutman’s Assistant Director, plays an important role in the plot.

The action accelerates until the only possible move left in the game is to GET SENATOR FINSILVER!
