Foreword
The USS Lollipop was, in terms of any man’s navy, a rather queer ship. Painted lily-white and manned by a lovely lavender crew, she was no doubt the only yacht that set out during World War II in search of the enemy, and instead found only friends wherever she went. As Erich Fromm observed in The Art of Loving, “Love can inspire the wish for sexual union; in this case the physical relationship is lacking in greediness, in a wish to conquer or be conquered, but is blended with tenderness. (But)… if erotic love is not also brotherly love, it never leads to union in more than an orgiastic, transitory sense.” The gay sailors of the Lollipop would certainly have been among the first to agree that true love had to be brotherly love!
