Foreword
How is it that some people seem to get into more difficulties than others? Even so seemingly everyday an activity as running a business can, for some, turn into an ordeal: a process frought with drama and conflict well outside the usual conflicts encountered in making a living.
And how is it, that being the case, that some people find their personal lives inextricably and intimately bound up with their occupations?
This book is an examination, in detail, of what can happen to such a person. It explores his motivations as well as his actions, looking for answers. And seeking for simpler, more easily managed, solutions to the hazards the characters encounter in their efforts to shape a reasonable life for themselves.
So often, just going along in the world, one finds oneself kicked in the head. Unexpected, undeserved, but still there—a wild, savage hurt that has no reason for being, no relationship at all to what one may deserve. It just happens.
This, too, is in this book. The random pain, dropping into the middle of plans, erupting across a man’s life and disrupting his existence in ways he never dreamed, not even in nightmare. How he deals with this, how it tests his character and complicates his way of living, that is in this book.
