“Oh my God… not Tommy… not my Tommy!!” Gary bellowed like a wounded animal. “Who the hell… what kind of a sick mind could do that to a kid like Tommy?” The tears coursed down his face without shame. He felt weak suddenly and the young police officer caught him as he started to black out and led him gently to the couch. “Oh, God… he was only twenty-one years old… and full of life…” The crying had reached its crisis and now became spasms of violent sobbing. His whole body shook as he buried his face in his hands. “I shouldn’t have been in Palm Springs,” he breathed brokenly. “If I’d been here, it wouldn’t have happened!”
The officer, hat in his hands, looked sympathetically uncomfortable. He cleared his throat, looked uneasily at Gary, and pulled the notebook from his pocket and stood with pen poised. “Mr. Baker… I realize how much of a shock this must be to you…” He coughed and continued, “But there are some questions that I must ask you now if we’re going to be able to start looking for this madman that murdered… your… Tommy.” Gary raised his hand and indicated that it was all right but didn’t lift his head from the other hand. “Mr. Baker, I take it that Tommy was your… uh… roommate?”
