Ernie and the mechanic rode in the cab of Ernie’s pickup and I rode naked in the back, the still desert air broken by an occasional tuft of wind, the full moon lighting up the gleaming sand like shattered beads of ice. The truck bounced over the dirt road for almost an hour. Then it began to slow down. I looked over the side in the direction we were headed. I could see the shape of crude wooden shacks and a large building off to the side. Between them was a clearing where a fire blazed and the voices of men laughing came across the endless night.
The truck came to a stop. The doors opened and both men got out.
“Okay, out of the truck.” The mechanic stood waiting.
As they walked over to the campfire, my trembling naked form between their powerful bodies, the voices began to fall away. All eyes were on the vision of three men, one naked, walking out of the darkness.
