Jeff Lanert had never liked girls, not since elementary school when he found them giggling at him and whispering behind his back because he was angular and tall, with bronzed features that suggested Indian blood, and had the drawl of a Southerner. To be different, he soon discovered, was to be singled out for ridicule, but it was the opposite sex that most plagued him.

Yet boys, too, could be crueller in their tricks center-ing around him as their target for crude, vulgar jokes. It wasn’t till he bloodied the nose of the worst bully who had hinted that his mother must have been black and his father a redskin that they began to respect him at school. In high school he showed that he could star in track in the mile and half-mile runs as well as in basketball because of his height, the jeers and taunts died out.

Still, they had left him bitter over the stupidity and bigotry of his fellows, and they had perhaps a traumatic on turning him into the cock-rapist he was destined to be.
