Excerpt
Another youth entered the café and sat alone at the table beside them. He was darkly handsome, probably about nineteen years old. As he seated himself the two other youngsters started whispering to each other animatedly. Suddenly the girl leaned over toward the newcomer.
“Hey, cat,” she said. “Do you mind if I ask you a question?”
“No, I don’t mind,” answered the dark one. “Go ahead, ask.”
She leaned a little closer to him, cupping her chin in hand as she spoke. “Are you gay?” she asked.
He appeared neither startled nor embarrassed by the question.
“Gay? I’m not very happy, if that’s what you mean,” he said.
The athletic boyfriend interrupted at this point.
“Naw, that’s not what she means, man,” he said. “She means are you queer—do you like to swing with other guys?”
“Yes,” the dark boy answered simply. “Why? Do you dig that scene?”
The girl interrupted.
“He doesn’t know yet. He’s tried it a couple of times, but hasn’t made up his mind. Mostly he digs me, but the minute you walked in here he told me that you turn him on. You wanna do it with him?”
“She says we can use her pad,” her boyfriend interjected.
The dark boy stood up. “Why not?” he said casually.
Without another word the two young men left together.
The girl lit a cigarette and ordered another coffee.
