At the hotel, he registered, and a boy took his suitcases, and took him up to his rooms.
The boy’s name was Joe Shishido and he was sixteen. Oliver liked the way his uniform fitted tightly around his young buttocks. He tipped the boy 360 yen which equaled an American dollar.
“Know your way around Tokyo?” he asked.
“I sure do,” the boy said.
“You speak very good English.”
“All the bellhops here do,” Joe said.
“We have to. This hotel is popular with American tourists.”
“A friend of mine told me about this hotel,” Oliver said, sitting down on the bed. “He’s been here many times. Export-import business. Does a lot of traveling.”
The boy just nodded his head.
“Emory Parnell,” Oliver said.
Recognition registered on the boy’s face.
He broke out in a huge grin. “Sure. I know Mr. Parnell. I spotted you right away… but I had to make sure. You know how it is.”
“Yeah.” Oliver winked and Joe winked back.
“You… uh… interested in some fun?”
“Not right now. Maybe tonight. Think you can make it tonight?”
“I can for 3,000 yen.”
That was almost six dollars. “Good enough,” Oliver said.
“I guess you want to see the city.”
“May as well. Know any good spots ? I mean places that someone like me would be interested in.”
“There’s a joint in the Roppongi district,” Joe informed Oliver. “The Bowl of Joy. Any cab will take you there. Just mention me if you want something.”
“That’s swell. Now where’s a good place to eat?”
“There’s the Fugetsudo Coffee House in the Shinjuku district. It’s the headquarters for the Tokyo hippies.”
“No, thanks.”
Joe mentioned a restaurant in the Ginza and Oliver thanked him. The boy left and Oliver unpacked. He put on a linen suit and mesh shoes and went down to search for a cab.
The restaurant was crowded. Oliver ordered Peking duck, saffron rice, and beer. He ate till he thought he would bust. Then he took a walk and saw the sights.
