Introduction
The sight of my helpless posture seemed to strike a responsive chord in the Scorpian’s mind. His anger faded as fast as it had come. He dropped down beside me on the floor, kneeling so that his thighs touched by chest as he shoved me completely onto my back. Difficult as it was for me to empathize with him—to empathize with any Scorpian—I was perfectly aware of the attitude which motivated this and his subsequent actions. In his book, I was his slave—his personal property. The law gave me to him, and whatever he wished to do short of depriving the authorities of their final judgment was within the realm of his discretion. Although I might hope that Laro would somehow alter the circumstances, it was unlikely he would miss me for several hours. For that length of time, at least, Nerman had control and could do whatever he saw fit.
