(This book is on high school reading lists… so don’t expect sex. But Burroughs fever dream here is a part of the history of gay literature. Some transcripts of the Boston trial are included as well. I always find these Beat Generation authors a little hard to read, but there’s definitely good stuff in here. -Timon)
The Supreme Court of Massachusetts in a decision handed down on July 7, 1966, declared Naked Lunch by William S. Burroughs not obscene. In clearing the novel of obscenity charges and finding that it was protected by the First Amendment of the United States Constitution, the highest court of Massachusetts reversed an earlier decision of the Superior Court of Boston and removed the threat of a state-wide ban on the book. Since Naked Lunch was first published in the United States in 1962, the only other censorship action against the book outside the State of Massachusetts occurred in Los Angeles, where the novel was cleared of obscenity charges at a trial in 1965.
