FOREWORD

The Gay Civil Rights movement has had at least one noticeable effect. It has shattered the old, straight concepts of what a homosexual is. And is not.

Straight society developed the image of a homosexual and enforced that image. Homosexuals were effeminate and not masculine. Homosexuals were different (queer).

Homosexuals were hair dressers, women’s fashion designers, show business types, but never found in masculine occupations.

Myra Mannis, a noted sociologist, noted that America’s frontier mentality had probably forced many an effeminate or artistic man into a homosexual life style where in a different society such an event would not have occurred. Dr. C.A. Tripp has noted that homosexuality exists in varying ratios in all societies, whether a society has strictures pro or anti homosexuality.

Up until the Gay Civil Rights movement, homosexuals “bought” the heterosexual image of themselves. This satisfied heterosexual society. But now that gay consciousness raising groups have revealed to the homosexual that he is must as masculine as his straight counterpart, heterosexual society has become afraid. Minorities are traditionally easily identifiable, either by race or religion or national origin. Homosexuality has none of these outward identifying characteristics.

Homosexuality has no basis in ecomonic, social or ethnic background, level or type of employment, racial or religious inheritance, family-life situation or educational significance.

No psychologist, anthropologist or biologist has been able to say why one person is homosexual and another is not.

David Kopay is, perhaps, the most visible example of the new homosexual.

What could be more masculine than a pro football player in America today? This is what disturbs the heterosexual. They cannot identify the homosexual at twenty paces; they cannot “ghettoize” him.

The carefully built image of the homosexual has crumbled around them (their image) and as with all images which crumble, fear follows.

The fact is that homosexuals can be found in any walk of life, in any economic status, any neighborhood, any occupation, small business man, corporate president, politician, construction worker, biologist, marine… truck driver.
