The phone ringing interrupted my thoughts. Shit, that was probably Hal calling to apologize for rushing off. I stubbed out the cigarette and grabbed the phone.

“Hello.”

“You bastard!”

The irate voice in my ear startled me.

“What?”

“This is Harold Brewster, Long,” the voice grated on. “What the hell have you done to my son?”

What the hell haven’t I done to him? I wondered. I had the feeling that the senior Brewster wasn’t referring to our sexual adventures.

“What are you talking about?” I demanded.

“You know damn well what I’m talking about,” Brewster raved on.. “I just got a phone call from someone claiming to be holding Hal a prisoner. They want me to pay them a hundred-thousand dollars for his return.”

My heart sank. So it was true. Hal had been kidnapped—and right under my nose, too. Shit!

“Don’t think you’re going to get away with this, Long,” Brewster ranted, his voice trembling with obvious rage.

His words sank in. “What the hell do you mean by that?” I was starting to get a little pissed off at his attitude.

“You’re behind this kidnapping,” he spelled it out for me. “You can’t fool me by having one of your confederates telephone. You want to get even for what Benson and I did to you.”

“You’re full of shit, Brewster. I had nothing to do with Hal’s kidnapping.”

“Don’t give me that crap. Julia told me she suggested you try to make a man out of Hal. That’s a laugh. You should have seen her face when I told her you’re a fucking faggot!’ His laugh was shrill in my ears. “Well, Mr. Shamus, you’re not getting a penny of ransom money out of me, and if Hal gets hurt, I’ll see to it that you wind up behind bars for the rest of your life.”

He hung up. I wanted to cut through his raving to ask for information about the ransom request, about information about Hal’s friends, about-well, about things that would help me find the sons of bitches who’d done this terrible thing. But I had the impression that Brewster wasn’t about to be cooperative with me. I hoped he’d contacted the police at least. I hated to think that poor Hal was a prisoner someplace and his father wasn’t doing anything to get him free.
