Trapped by racial guilt, Adrian’s morbid desire to be enslaved by black masters sucked him into the stygian whirlpool of self-abasement. ADRIAN held within him the compulsive need to atone for the racial abuses of his forefathers. It took only the stimulus of switching roles—as a joke—with a black man. The joke cost him his life. MAXWELL, a hip, bearded and black sculptor, couldn’t resist Adrian’s submissive will and slavish self-offering. The innocence of the blond youth was more than his dark desires could withstand, and he sold him, a flesh-and-blood sculpture in masculine beauty, to KRAMER, a millionaire art-fancier. Howard Jones, in Crime in a Changing Society, explains the deep-seated needs of one such as ADRIAN: “Some psychoanalysts are now raising the question of whether, especially in the case of crimes against the person… the victim may not be as responsible for the offense as the person who perpetrates it. The crime… may be invited by the victim because it satisfies some unconscious wish in him.”
