FOREWORD

The beach at noon: a young man and his easel, a young man in the nude, the aqua-blue sea, the robin’s-egg-blue sky, the golden, sun-warmed sand. The situation: Lavender.

* * *

The sunlit Spanish cottage lay nestled between rocky California cliffs and the eternal azure sea. It was ideal for Clay’s needs—a haven for the tyrst with his lover, a place where he could paint and feel free. But jealousy and repressed desire hung heavily over the coast, ready to strike without warning from the mist that shrouded the coastal cliffs. Each man that Clay met sought to become his lover, his only lover, and unwittingly, Clay had stolen the heart of Adam’s son. The longing to make love to his own son drove the older man to attempt to destroy Clay’s idyllic plans. Thwarted lust and intrigue built around the young artist until they threatened to engulf him and end his lonely quest—a quest characterized by Kenneth Walker and Peter Fletcher in Sex and Society: “Love impels us to a search… for an unknown someone with whom we can hope to establish a reciprocal, and therefore completely human, relationship.”
