Introduction

Boulder had been the one who had dubbed Thad Norris, “Hunk”.

Thad had been just an ordinary laborer then, working a carrot field near Shafter. He was near the road when Boulder braked his Porsche, a yellow gleam of steel and speed, and shouted over the gunning engine, “Hey, Need some help?”

Thad thought he was kidding. “Sure!” And when the yellow Porsche left rubber and aimed toward the contractor’s bus, Thad shook his head and mumbled something about a full day’s work will kill the little shit. But it hadn’t, and Boulder had nearly run through the field so he could work beside Thad.
