Foreword

The search for self-identity can lead down strange paths. What is right for me? is a question each individual must answer for himself. More often than we like to think, the answer to that question is outside the “norm”.

The decision must then be: self-fulfillment, or compromise?

Of course one of the conditions of civilization is compromise of some sort, but the view that in human sexuality the individual must be free to make his own choice is fortunately becoming more prevalent. Providing that choice does not involve children or coercion. In other words, a choice involving consenting adults.

In this novel the handsome Uncle has long since found his self-identity. But for the nephew the key to his true nature is only dimly comprehended during a short vacation on his uncle’s ranch when he is eighteen. Reese becomes physically attracted to a hired hand who is at least ten years his senior. Yet this masculine man is strangely submissive. There is some mystery as to Uncle Dennis’ true relationship to the hired man, Clay.

Years later, when Reese has graduated from college, he is again invited to spend some time on the ranch. A vacation that leads to a startling discovery about himself, for this time an even more attractive man arrives to work for his uncle. He is Brad, just released from a local prison farm where he has satisfied the lust of the deputy sheriff and favored guard and trustee.

Brad has made quite a different discovery about himself. He is an opposite, a complement to Uncle Dennis. And as it turns out, to Dennis’ young nephew as well.

Another surprise is in store for Reese with the sudden arrival on the ranch of his college roommate, Ben, and he realizes the truth of a prevalent theme in literature: the unpredictability of life.
