FOREWORD

The old debate about which has the greatest influence on shaping individual character, inherent traits or environment, may never be resolved. Each person will answer pro or con according to his own personal experiences. Or, more importantly, depending upon how he yielded to internal or external catalysts in shaping his life.

Certainly, family backgrounds and inherited tendencies differ. Some mutations are predictable, by knowing the two parent stocks. Agronomists can produce hybrids with emphasis on certain characteristics. It is a recognized fact that each generation of our youths grows taller than its forebears. Other more subtle changes may be taking place in the evolution of the human race.

Whether deviation can be inborn, or whether it is the direct result of traumatic episodes in early life, has also been open to argument. Looking back in our own lives, all of us can remember incidents that help us to agree with the viewpoint that there is a certain attraction to the perverted types of erotic stimulation in every boy or man. It might have taken only a very slight push, on certain occasions, to have swayed any of us toward a life of corrupting the young.

Whether Lowell, in Brown Eye Boy, was too obsessed with sex at too early an age, as his mother accused, or whether his curiosity about male animals and his fellow playmates, was completely normal for a child, the reader can only judge from his own boyhood.

Other questions to be considered are:

Whether the selfishness that made Lowell seek only his own satiation, unwilling to allow time for hugging and kissing, is a common trait of the young, or whether it was sadistic cruelty that kept sex separated from lovemaking, preventing any real attachments throughout his lifetime.

Whether all boys are instrinsically exhibitionists, and such attempts at indecent exposure in public are relatively harmless, or whether the schoolmates Lowell associated with marked his fixations on the rear view and phallic displays.

Whether the cross-educating that adolescent boys do in early experimental stages can be natural and beneficial, without leading to pedophilic perversions later on.

The fact remains that the incidents related in Brown Eye Boy actually happened to one boy, who we have conveniently identified with the name Lowell, in pretty much the order given, and with the kinds of impacts upon his thinking that he reveals in retrospect.

Now, as a man in trouble with the law, he is willing to have his story told, for whatever warning or guidance or preventative help his experiences my be to the reading public.
